image map with animated gif's

hi all, i'm trying to make a custom navigation bar using an image map and animated gifs. I have it on the page but when you click on it, it opens in a new window where it works fine. Is there some specific file structure to the map / html / images & folders to get this to work in place?
Does it have to do with saving it out as "client side / server side... etc"?
