HTML Header question

I have a couple of headers throughout my site that I have created as images because of the font I use.
Is it 'legal' to create a header in html and place it behind my image so it doesn't show but allows the SEs to read it for better optimization?
It sounds like a really good idea but I do not want to shoot myself in the foot!

NO! That could actually get you banned by search engines. You want to use the alt text for the images.

So, go hide the gun!

You can use an alt tag for image description which is in html legally.
