What's "Alternate Text" in Shape Properties?

When I go to Insert > Shape > Shape Properties, there is an "Alternate Text" field I can type into. Is the text I type in there supposed to appear in the shape? Or somewhere else? Just curious . . . thanks.

The "Alternate Text" is the text you want to display when someone places their mouse over the shape. you can use it to either provide intructions like, "Click the shape to....."...if need be or simply a description that would help people learn more about what they are viewing.

The alternate text is also what the users browser will display if it can't display the image or link.

It is also read by the search engines as text and can be a great place to position some of your descriptive keywords.
