upload template

Hi there,
I purchased a cool looking premium template for my website but when I try and upload it via the control panel, it says template error. I know almost nothing about templates and really want to get this template uploaded as it looks cool and will definitely make my site look a lot more professional.
Can anyone help me please?
As I don't know what info to include, please ask any questions and i will then try and answer them.

Well first question is.. where did you purchase the template, and second question .. for which program did you purchase the template for?
