Picture re-sizing for uploads...

I need help with putting photos from my album on the website....I have put them on OK and they work beautifully....but oh so slow ! I have set my gallery page using thumbnails and when visitors to my site click on one of them the whole original photo downloads to them on a new page.
I have seen somewhere that the pictures should open with firstly a black screen and then a smaller version of the photo appears in the centre with 'next' and 'previous' buttons ...but this is not happening.Please tell me why !
I am not a 'techy' person just a pensioner who is chuffed to bits with creating a website in 6 hours.......please don't tell my son I asked for help..

you should have Pixresizer downloaded to make your pictures an appropriate size. Here is that link:
