Text background is proving a nightmare

I have used Bluevoda before and this problem is new to me. When I am inserting text, the background is completely black while I am typing and I cant see what I am doing (this is if I want the background transparent). In properties I leave it on automatic. It shows a black box next to it though. If i change it to white it gives me a while background which I dont want.

Delete the Textbox and create a new one, being careful to not change any properties whatsoever.
