How to "layer" backgrounds?

I would like to create an effect like the ones seen here:

But I can't figure out how they "layer" one patterned background over another (or use a plaid as the back color with white or solid on top).

Does that make any sense?

Hi Karen,
You could set the background to, for example, plaid in page properties. Then you could use a shape, coloured however you want, solid, graduated, or whatever over the top.

Alternatively you could create your own background in an apploication like MSPublisher, or similar, and save as a webpage or gif. Have a play about and try out some different things - it's great fun. If you decide to do your own try and remember to size it for the page size that you want then you won't get stretching or tiling.
