Insert split in Menu Bar

Hi,

I'm trying to put a word only menu across the bottom of the page using the "insert split fuction" but although they show in preview when it comes to publish you can't see them. I think it's because they are white ( and I'm using a white background page)

Is there a way to change the colour of the split to the same as the text so I get a clean line like this with no background

Home | Marketing | Contact

or do I have to do it manually. I know it works if you have a background, but I really don't what one.

I'm probably missing something simple here.
