    preview and link assistance

This is a real strange one for me. I have been using BV for over a year, nothing fancy and just straight forward pages

Normally when I am changing or making a page I will preview it several times as I work before publishing it, to check everything works

Today I came to change and update a page

As normal I made a word document and placed in my BV folder

I then created a link to the doc as always on my page.

How ever when I cam to preview it I kept getting a 404 page not found error

I spent a long time checking the link was correct and also testing other links on other pages inside BV.

All the links worked in preview apart from the one I had made today. However I noticed that the preview page and links where taking a long time to appear

As a test I disabled my internet connection and tried the links again.

I then found all the links will not work and I am getting a 404 not available (as I am not connected to the internet)

I thought that in preview mode that the links would fetch the documents on my own (local) hard drive otherwise I would have to publish before I could preview which defeats the whole exercise

Have I managed to do something to BV so it is looking for the server in preview instead of my own hard drive?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as it is driving me wild

    Thanks

    Scott

    I am using version 9.1.0

Hi Scott...You can take a look at a page using preview tool...the page will have to be published in order to link to it ... and be sure that the link addressing and page address are exactly correct... a missing dot, letter or anything will give you a 404..hope that helps... Doug

      Thanks for the reply

I am not trying to link to another page.

I have typed a pedigree in word. Saved the file to my BV file

On my puppy web page I am trying to link to that pedigree. In the past I have had no problem but now it comes up 404.

I have double checked the link and compared it against working links and I have not missed out anything (or added anything)

Certainly is a mystery just now

      Cheers

        Re: preview and link probelm

Convert your word document to a pdf and link your pdf to your word pedigree ... make sure you link according to the name of the pdf that you upload via the ftp method ... and use the .pdf extension ...

        eg

          Re: preview and link probelm

I like the idea of converting to PDF and will certainly do that

However the problem I am having is making the link work in Preview mode. I do not want to upload anything just now as it is work in progress

Here is a copy of a link that works in preview mode

And here is a copy of a link that does not

Both files are in the same folder in my BV but the top one works (different page) and the bottm one does not

          The plot thickens

          Cheers

                Re: preview and link probelm

can we see how the page was saved? i have found 2 things very important when linking.
                1. the actual link which you are showing
                2. the saved page must match the link

aside from that why dont you save the 2nd page with a different name similar to the 1st one and see if that works.
