  • Including a Word Doc for Printing

This is a first time post. My domain is mywvhstv.org. I am building a web site for my students to use. I have several word docs that I have created and that I want students to locate from one or more of the web pages I have constructed. Once they locate the word docs I want them to be able to print the document. What is the best way to design and/or link to this type of feature?

You can upload them to your FTP in your public_html folder. Then on your website, you may make links and link them to the file, for example:

http://www.example.com/wordfile.doc or /wordfile.xdoc if you're using Word 2007. Once they click on it, it will ask them to open it or save it.

Hi, you can have the doc as a download, or use one of the free pdf converters that have been suggested on this forum.(Unless you already have one)? http://www.primopdf.com/ http://www.pdf995.com/ Good luck. Ah! Jeremy is the quicker typist. lol Ah! Jeremy is the quicker typist. lol

If you don't want them to edit them, you can always convert them to PDF like Chris said, if not then keep them as a .doc file.

Thanks for the tips, but I still need some help. I downloaded Chris' PDF file and copied my doc file to FTP. I am having trouble linking to it. Here is my situation: I have a word doc that I want to link to from a web page. I do not want anyone to be able to edit the doc so it needs to be a PDF. I will convert the file to PDF and park the file in the FTP. On the web page I will highlight the words Course Outline and go to the link icon. In the link menu I will type in the following: Link Type: http://; URL: http://mywvhstv.org/comm1.html/not sure what goes here. Does the file name ending in pdf or prn go here?

If the file is in your public_html, type: http://mywvhstv.org/filename.pdf where filename is the actual name of your file.

            Link type http:// is ok.

Thanks. I have the links working to the pdf files.

On a related matter, I have a PowerPoint presentation I would like to link to. How should that be done? Should I convert the PP to a PDF and link to it as a PDF?

Re: Including a Word Doc for Printing

PP I believe is a different story. You can put a PP file as a linked download on your site. But the visitor must have PP on there machine. (not all will) There is software out there that will convert pp to html so you can have it on your site as a web page. Might have to do a Google search for this. Open office will do it. But it’s a big download.

                Good luck.
                Regards Chris.

Re: Including a Word Doc for Printing

The free software you could make available to your visitors is called PowerPoint Viewer. PowerPoint Viewer 2003

PowerPoint Viewer 2003 lets you view full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later versions. If your visitors use this, they do not need to have PowerPoint installed.

There could be a better way to implement this software on your website, but I'm not sure how. In the company I work for, I make the viewer available for download and it works perfectly.
                  Bless you

Re: Including a Word Doc for Printing

Next question: I have a slide show that I created from digital photos that I put into a software package (3D Album) that packages the slides with great transitions. One of the choices I have to finalize the package is making it an html file, which I did. The vendor says I can link from my web page to the slide show. However, I am not sure how best to do this. The html file is tucked in a folder with the photos. The slide show consist of 3 files and two folders. All of the files and folders are tucked into one folder. That folder is listed as a [Sub-Dir] in blueFTP. I can link to it, however the files are displayed on an INDEX page. Does anyone have any idea how best to link to a slide show?

Re: Including a Word Doc for Printing

Hi, I am assuming this is some sort of photo show that will work on the web? If so, most of the time you would upload everything this program has produced on to your server & there should be a file called index. You can test this by going to your c panel & finding this file & opening it in your browser. If all ok? This should be the link to the picture show.
Note: When you upload these files, I would recommend creating a new folder to place them in. (Its easier to play around with)
                      Regards Chris.

How to you find the file in the cpanel? I uploaded the file. The file does not contain any file that is an index file.
