Balancing graphics quality to size of file

    Hi,

I've been asked to put a website together for a small fine art shop and framing service. The problem I'm having is finding an acceptable size for the jpg files so they don't load like "treacle" (especially on a non-broadband connection), but still have reasonable viewing quality. The main page I have a problem with is this http://www.harrisonlord.com/gallery.html. This now loads real fast, but if you click on either of the 2 images I've set up to enlarge, the quality is just not good enough!! If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can solve this problem, I would be grateful to hear from you. By the way, I'm a total novice at building websites, and especially in dealing with graphics!!

    Regards,
    Dave Shore

      Thanks for the quick reply.

I've been using this software all afternoon now to try and find the right balance between jpg size and image quality. However I seem to have a problem where the images don't always load up cleanly and I have to press "refresh" to get the image to complete. It is not always the same image that does not complete, nor do they always stop at the same point - which confuses me totally. On this page http://www.harrisonlord.com/framing.html there are only 2 jpg images to load, but one or other (sometimes both) does not completely load up. The files are now down to just 2k and 3k, so I'm sure the size is not the issue here. Is there something that I'm doing wrong?

      Regards,
      Dave

I see what you mean. Thise two load horribly slow...Do the below....

        1) Remove those two pics from your index pae
        2) Reboot your computer
        3) Rename the two master pics (to confuse BlueVoda)
        4) Run the two renamed master pics through pics resizer
        5) Re-ad them to your webpage.

Thanks, that has worked just fine. The files are bigger than I'd got them too, but load up just fine now and with much better quality than before. One thing that I did notice, which may have contributed to, or caused, the problem - when I used FTP Manager to clear out the jpgs from the VodaHost directory I noticed that the various programs that I had used to resize the images used differing file extensions. So each image file had a .jpg and a .JPG file. Pixresizer saves then with the lower case extension, whereas Microsoft Picture Manager saves upsing the upper case version. Don't know if that caused BlueVoda a problem or not?

Anyway, working just fine now - thanks again for your superb support!!

          Regards,
          Dave

One thing I have learned in this business is that you can spend 3 hours
trying to fix something and trying to figure out why it does not work, Or
you can spend 15 minutes deleting it and redoing it and it will be as good
            as new.

            Whats my point???

Life is too short to let computers mess you about.
