"program not responding"

When publishing any page, on occasions I have had the need to interrupt the publishing process...
I press the "cancel" button in the publishing pop-up box and the program responds with a program not responding message in the title bar and the screen going partially transparent.

Is this normal? Is there a way to cancel the publishing process?

Don't know if it's normal but it happens just the same for me.

Just to reword my question a bit....

What is the cancel button in the publishing pop-up box for?

the only thing it seems 2 do is freeze up the program.
