What did I do wrong? Embedding a document

Hello, I just started publishing our website (this is the first time I've done this and I a complete neophite at this) and I cannot get the 'Weekly Specials' document to show up. I saved the document in the Bluevoda folder and it has a .doc extention. When I open it up in the blue voda folder nothing shows up on the page. I watched your tutorial on embedding a document. I copied the code and put it in the html box. I uploaded the document via FTP. I must be missing a step or something. I will have to update this 'specials page' on a weekly basis. Thank you in advance for your help. Reenie

Personally I would use a .doc file anyway. I would convert the doc to .pdf which is more internet friendly.

Anyhow if you have uploaded your doc to the server the address of the doc should be something like.

You could put a big I-Frame on your page use the document url to be displayed in it

Each time you need to change the offer, change the url in the I-Frame

Look for a tutorial that covers I-Frames

Re: What did I do wrong? Embedding a document

Hello again and thank you for your help. I changed it to a pdf document as DarrenC suggested and used an I frame. It worked, however, the pdf document comes up in a different window. How do I get the pdf to stay on the 'weekly specials' page within the confines of the I frame. There are some graphics that I would like to show up on that page above the document. Should this page be published as a php instead? I just thought of that. Please excuse me for my dumb questions, but this is the first website I built. Thank you.

Looks like its now working as i would expect it but you no longer have nav buttons at the top.

I would move the I-Frame down and retain the header so this page looks the same as all the others.

Re: What did I do wrong? Embedding a document

Hello again, Thank you for your fast reply DarrenC. In my browser, the pdf document still pops up in a separate window (with all the pdf tools) that fills the whole screen and not within the boundaries of the Iframe. The only graphics that I wanted on the 'specials' page is 5 white horse & buggies (and I added the menu bar under the horse & buggies), and then for the document to display below that on the same page. Is this possible? I did not want to put the same heading on this page as on the others because it would be too redundant, as the name of the market is on the pdf document as well. Thanks again. No, as a PDF file will always open its own "PDF window" because it is a PDF document, and all PDF documents can only be "read" using Adobe Viewers (which is the 'browser' you speak of with all the PDF functions/tools).
If you wish to display only a portion of the content that is formatted within a PDF document, you will have to copy it from PDF to either create a new web page page area containing whatever you wish (and then you can link to it to open in a standard web browser by itself) or in another format which must use whatever 'browser' required to open/view the document.

              * If you wish to use an iFrame as you are presently, and are battling the framed areas of the PDF viewer being visible, simply create a series of black rectangles ("shapes") to lay over the areas you wish to "mask" ... being careful to keep the scrollbar available so visitors can advance their view to see all the pages.

Hello, Thanks Vasili for your imput. I took the Iframe out and just linked the documents to images and it works on my browser. Do I have to put a link to download adobe acrobat reader? I thought everyone has that program automatically installed with windows. (thats how little I know). Could you please check it out and see? Does the page load up to slow? Thank you for your help. Reenie
