how do you know if webpages are too big before publishing

How do you check to see if the web pages I've created are too large / take too long to load and the average person's computer? Yes, I could just call a friend who is using dial up service and ask him to check out my website, but I'd have to publish it ... I don't want to publish it 'til I know it works well.

    Thank you,
