Cutting image from white background

Hi all

I am not sure if this is the right place please accept my apologies if it is not. I read a post about this question ages ago and I cannot find it now despite searching for the past hour.
I want to cut an image from a white background so that when I place is on a coloured background it doesn't look like it has been cut and stuck. No what I mean? The image is on www.servicemaisonsecondaire.com at the bottom on the right hand side. It is a dragonfly or try here

Go to paint.net and download their free software. Its easy to use and you can use the magic wand tool to remove the background from an image. Remember to re-save the new image as .png to retain its transparency.

Thank you for the link I have downloaded the software and am now trying to find my way around it! It has been two hours already and I still can't follow the step by step instructions! I think they have changed the layout of the programme and not updated the help page. However I am sure I will get there eventually and at least I know what I have to do.......sort of.
