Using someones email address as the username in the login tool

Hello,

I've just set up a members only area on my website using the login tools in BlueVoda - It was super easy to do thanks to Navaldesign's tutorial.

The only issue I have is that I would have preferred to allow the members to use their email address as the username however when they do they are met with a message that reads 'Username is not valid, please check and try again'

How can I program the system to allow an email address to be used as a username without getting this message?

This has been disabled for security reasons (not allowing email addresses to be scoured from sites and spammed or sold to hacks) and in compliance with current WWW protocols.
