Drop Down Menu Change

Created a drop down menu for my website and currently using the "Theme Panel" for it,but when I go to publish,they look flat and colorless.tried the other's in the panel, but still look rather plain.Is there a way to dress them up to look like drop menu's I have seen on other websites? Can borders be added? Can you change the colors?
