Attempts to Edit Hyperlink Style Fail! Help!

I keep trying to change the style of a hyperlink from the standard blue to another color. I highlight the text to be linked, click the hyperlink button, go to the "appearance" box and click "edit styles". I change the text & background colors, click OK. I make sure "style 1" is clicked as the one I just edited and click OK. But the text still appears as blue. Any idea as to what is blocking the change?
