Resizing Fixed Menu Navigation Buttons?

Is it just me or can you only edit the text in each button and the style of button, but not make the button itself any bigger? I'd like big chunky buttons, but seem stuck with the standard size offered in the Navigation bar editing tool. Anyone any ideas?
