linking help required

I have started building a website and a complete beginner but have managed to get the pages and content in place. Very pleased with the result so far. I am now stating to link pages but have a question regarding the the edit button facility. there is a section in the box that refers to TARGET...........with 4 options to choose from i.e. blank parent top and self. Giving my limited ability with building a website, please could someone tell me what this refers too in particular.
