    Need help with new domain

    Did an add on domain, calle10hostel.com; to www.medellintravelguide.com

    Published my index page; www.calle10hostel.com

    Added 8 other pages as;

    www.calle10hostel.com/aboutus.html
    www.calle10hostel.com/services.html
    www.calle10hostel.com/prices.html

    Etc.

    and published them.

    I can go to the index page just fine but when I click on any link I get a;

    http://www.calle10hostel.com/http://www.calle10hostel.com/services.html
    http://www.calle10hostel.com/http://www.calle10hostel.com/prices.html

    Obviously, these result in a 404 Error web page not found.

    Anybody have any ideas.

    I have deleted the domain add on and re-added it back again but I still get the same result.

    Thanks in advance for any assistance. I am sure I have done something totally stupid and you would think someone managing 12 websites with over 1,000 individual pages and 8-10 times that many links would know how to resolve this.

    At this point, I am baffled!

    Re: Need a little help with a new domain

    The 8 pages that you give examples of should not have the www.calle10hostel.com/ part. Just name your page (for example) aboutus and make sure you publish it to the calle10hostel.com folder.

      Tom,

      Sorry I wasn't more specific;

      they are published as;

      aboutus.html
      prices.html
      services.html

      Etc.

      They are being published to public_html/calle10hostel.com under my MTG website.

      Thanks for taking your time and taking a stab at it.

        Re: Need a little help with a new domain

        It is critically important to make the distinction of what type of domain you are publishing to ...

        ADD-ON DOMAIN
        If you are publishing to an Add-On Domain, your Publish Dialog Box should look like this: public_html/calle10hostel.com .... and NOT like this as you say you have been publishing ... public_html/www.calle10hostel.com
        Publishing with the "www." will create a link dysfunction and mess up your directory.
        Be sure you have properly configured DNS/Nameserver info for the domain at wherever it resides, even if with VodaHost.

        Links to the Add-On Domain site should look like this if published properly: www.calle10hostel.com ; www.calle10hostel.com/about.html ; and so on

        SUB-DOMAIN
        Publishing to a Sub-Domain should look like this in your Publish Dialog Box: public_html/medellintravelguide.com/calle10hostel.com

        Links to the Sub-Domain site should look lke this if published properly: http://calle10hostel.medellintravelguide.com ; http://calle10hostel.medellintravelguide.com/prices.html and so on.

        1. You'll find some useful tips on publishing to a Sub-Domain in this post (and in this post).
        2. Be sure you know the difference between an Add-On Domain and a Sub-Domain, as outlined in this thread.
        3. Lastly, be sure you know the difference between a Sub-Directory and a Sub-Domain as discussed at length in this thread.

          Hi, Vasili--I hope your health has been good. Someone mentioned that some of the newer add-on folders do indeed publish to www.whatever, but I don't know if that's so.

          Wait--maybe it was some have the .com and some don't :)

            Thanks, Tom - Hanging in there.

            Someone doesn't know what they're talking about.
            It's the latter (adding the ".com") and has been on most "newer" servers with cPanel 11+ since Summer 2008.

              Thanks Vasilli,

              As I mentioned, I am publishing to public_html/calle10hostel.com under my MTG website

              the page extensions are being published as IE: aboutus.html; services.html; prices.html etc

              But, when you click on a link you get this http://www.calle10hostel.com/http://...m/aboutus.html
              404 error wbe page not found.

              It is very perplexing.

              Any other ideas?

                Re: Need a little help with a new domain

                Benjamin is it?

                You have "duplicated" URL entries in the hyperlink field in the Menu Properties Dialog box, as seen if you mouseover your text-Menu at the bottom of your page online (http://calle10hostel.medellintravelguide.com/): they each show two complete URL's rather than a single one. You can see this already, but obviously it escaped your attention.

                You will have to delete the URL entries for each page and re-enter a single URL to the correct page and duplicatete the corrected Menu across all pages using the COPY Icon and the PASTE Icon (both at the top Toolbar) to maintain perfectly precise positioning and re-publish each page, starting with the "index" page in order to maintain site continuity and functionality.

                I can only guess that since you are in Columbia and the MedellinTravelGuide.com domain is owned by a party in the States, you are likely working side-by-side using improper or un-informed methods: if you are 'sharing' pages by email, are working with files stored on an external drive, have migrated pages files from one computer to another, or if you "recovered" the pages via Remote Importation, in every case all images will need to be re-inserted onto the page and such dynamic elements will need to be entirely re-created prior to being saved as a new page and then re-published due to the disassociation from original Source Files (where the objects, imported images, etc. are stored on the originating Hard Drive folders). Every dynamic element (Menu systems, links, script-based image display tools, etc.) and the page code itself will not retain original encryption nor be prepared to be un-encrypted by the Server according to the Publish protocol and thus be converted into properly formatted HTML, and, therefore must be entirely re-formatted (re-built).
                The same dysfunctiopn emerges when "uploading" page files directly to the server rather than properly Publishing them from within BlueVoda (the BV Publishing process allows the files to convert via server-based de-cryption to a working HTML format).

                Try following these established methods strictly and to keep these datails in mind to avoid issues in the future.

                If by no fault of your own in compliance with all the above the issue persists, it may be that you should contact Support to confirm that your account was properly migrated to the new server and that all the settings are properly configured (since they are a different type, different formatting is required and may not have been precisely implemented). Simply create a Support Ticket briefly outlining that hyperlinks are being improperly duplicated despite proper publishing.

                  Re: Need help with new domain

                  Thanks Vasili but it actually turned out to be "none of the above".

                  I was missing a / in my http://www.mydomainname.com URL links It only had one / http:/wwwmydomain.....

                  Working like a charm now.

                  Thanks for all the help folks.

                  Gonna go get a new pair of glasses today....LOL

                    Re: Need help with new domain

                    I know exactly how frustrating it can be to be confounded by the simplest things, which is why I am such a proponent of composing things in Word first rather than on-the-fly directly in BV and maintaining discipline doing the tedium that is the backbone of function!

                    Funny how the links you copied into your original post and which I observed online originally did not have this issue, for I would have noticed and said something. Glad it got taken care of nonetheless!
