Wordpress PHP Memory Issue

Disclaimer: I am not a computer whiz so don't judge me too harshly.

Wordpress has started giving me errors whenever I try to install a plugin or update WP itself. The errors follow this basic form Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2966269 bytes) in /home/missouri/public_html/therightopinions.com/wp-includes/class-http.php on line 1408.
There is a WP plugin called memorybump that says it will allow you to update to 3.0.1 and then this problem will go away, and it says if that doesn't work the problem lies with the hosting service. So, I tried the plugin and it didn't work, now I'm wondering what remedy I can find here.

Note: I'm not even beginning to scratch the surface of my allotted disk space etc.

1. What plug-in's did you try to install which were unsuccessful?
2. What version of WP are you currently running?
3. How long have you had this blog up and running?
4. Is it a Fantastico install or manual?

1. Any plugin, it even did it once when I tried to upload a picture.
2. It all started when I tried to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.0.1, I successfully upgraded from 2.9 to 3.0 a couple months ago.
3. Since early June.
4. I believe it is a Fantastico install but I can't make any guarantees its been awhile since I installed it.

First of all, there is no real reason to upgrade a WP version once installed unless there are specific functions that are not available on the current version: the newer versions typically correct only the patch code and security errors in the "stable" version release prior. Upgrading all the time is simply an ego-stroke, unless you know what you are doing, and from you not even knowing if it is a manual install or Fantastico auto-install tells a lot.

I assume you did not do a proper ugrade, since it is rather a laborious process, which is why your present version is currupt (attempt to upload a picture). It would also explain why a plug-in is not associating with the foundation.

Assuming it is a Fantastico install, I would go to the WP Support Forums and print out the instructions on how to save a backup of whatever you currently have so you can delete your current installation, re-install with the most current version available in your cPanel, and then transfer your DB backup onto your new installation.

It will be a time-consuming task that will challenge your ability to follow instructions with particular focus, but, thousands have gone before you, so take heart!

If I were sitting at your desk and could see the details of your account, it would only verify that this is only the best course of action left to you. But, you can always browse through the WP Forums to confirm, if you'd like.
And .... you should get familiar with the WP Forums, as you should be making them your first Solutions Stop on your list anyway.

I don't think I upgraded incorrectly considering the fact that I was informed by by WP that all that was required was hitting the "upgrade automatically" button. And I'm pretty sure its not a corruption considering the fact that it started with bigger files such as the update or a large theme template while I could still install plugins, and then proceeded to plugins while I could still upload pictures, and finally started occurring when I tried to upload a picture. It has a definite shrinking tendency like I'm running into a memory restriction just as the error message indicates. The only reason I upgraded was because there was a yellow banner across the top of my admin page constantly encouraging me to upgrade.
ps: this is a problem that many WP users have experienced. I know this because I have spent days on the WP forums trying all the "tricks" they could come up with, and the recurring theme was: 'if this doesn't work talk to your host, the problem most likely lies with them.'

As stated above, it matters not what prompted you to upgrade, the reason to do so is pointless, and given your understanding of all things pertinent your opinion of how the process was performed is indefensible.

Unless you are reviewing the official WP Tutorials, you are following the simple understandings and musings of Users, not experts, as the banter in the WP Forums reveals.

There is no memory restirction on any hosting account at VodaHost, either for strorage or per domain, and Wordpress is specifically enabled to function optimally on the RAID3 VodaHost servers in all cases and for all versions, so it is memory not an issue: the issue remains in your installation singularly, as there have not been any other such difficulties posted in the VodaTalk Forums other than yours. Period!

If you have such documentation to support that it is due to anything but User error or omission, then Submit a Support Ticket to see if there is something that can be done from an Administrative side, however unlikely.

PHP Memory Changable?

Since you were so abundantly helpful earlier I have another question for you. While browsing my CpanelX I decided to check out my 'PHP Configuration' and I found this gem

memory_limit 32M


Is this something I can change? It says, "These PHP configuration settings are customizable by the server administrator. They are listed for reference only." that sounds like something out of my control.

Wordpress Codex files (their tutorials, not the "simple understandings and musings of Users") says that the error messages I mentioned earlier are caused by exhausting available PHP memory. It provides a simple fix (a small edit of some code), but it also says that, "Please note, this setting may not work if your host does not allow for increasing the PHP memory limit." Which the aforementioned 'PHP Configuration' page would indicate might be the case. Which brings me right back to my original question, which you answered so succinctly. Or not.

What I decide to address or refrain from explaining is very much predicated upon what level of understanding I perceive in a peer User and how any interaction will benefit or confound, and is not subject to critical debate or question per Forum Rules.

At this juncture and for this particular issue, I suggest you take your techincal questions to Support rather than proliferate profundities* in these Forums: they are not universally helpful or positive.


* I will say this, however .... I have 5 hosting accounts with various cPanel versions and more than 400 websites, and of these 32 of them are original (non-updated) WP installations that have been running for years and hold thousands of pages each. As you might guess, they have countless plug-in's installed to make them extremely efficient and rather nifty indeed for Visitors and ease of Admin use (takes a lot of time managing all those sites, you know), and I have never had to increase any PHP limitations whatsoever. I stand by my position that you have a faulty installation (or conversion), but like I suggested, submit your querry to Support and see what they say and hopefully you will once again be RIGHT.... seems the more time goes by, the nature of your issue changes, and I hope that this seeming vascillation indicates to some degree that you are learning something, if not resolving!
