Opening Template that's Not BV Template

Hi all. I'm new and think this is going to be a great experience. But, I have a bit of a problem. I had a downloaded a free template and when I try and open the index file in the BV site builder it give me the error code "unexpected format". Could someone please direct me or perhaps tell me how to open a simple index.html file in the BV site builder. I understand that a BV site has a different extension. I would appreciate any help you might can give. Thanks so much.
