I was wondering what techniques you guys use for marketing, do you get much success from

The marketing efforts you mentioned are effective only when applied in a cohesive, targeted, and measurable program that you must design yourself, as your needs and expectations are different than those others must deal with.

Each delivers different types of customers, and each requires different levels of investment (money out of pocket, time to update site, etc.). You need to fully investigate each program to determine your abilities and expectations.

The best programs initially are the ones you create yourself, as they will undoubtedly target the customers you are seeking, and may also provide the beginnings of relationships with other websites/vendors that prove to be mutually beneficial. You might try to create a list of complimentary sites that you can approach directly to place/trade your banners and links with, as the SE metrics with regard to relevancy will assuredly elevate positioning of both sites (something that may not be measurable merely enrolling in a paid advertising program). Additionally, you have a better control over the types of customer you stand to deliver, and any effort to "pre-qualify" customers adds to increased conversions. These are just two of the immediate features of a personally-designed marketing program, and there are many more.

Paid online marketing programs can make a difference for some sites, and many times it need not be an expensive effort to maintain. You really need to pencil yourself some sort of plan first, and then evaluate means to accomplish the goals you envision.
