Advise needed for user managed pay site?

I have been asked to setup a site where users can register, select applicable content and pay to use the selected content. What is the best way to go? How do I build in the payment system and track that payment has been made so as to remove manual checking every month? I think I have an idea as to how to keep the content safe (not allowing people to download it so as to not have to pay again - consist of formuals etc) but if anyone has any good ideas please post them.

    Thanks
    D.

You are asking a lot.....and trying to do something that is more of a "blending" of functionality that you needn't really complicate yourself with, especially from the beginning.

    >> Ponder these concepts first: Membership, shopping cart, download, and Group Management.

Now....stroll through the features of a few of the available shopping carts that are easy to establish, manage, and would function soundly for a "download" business to see if they have the look-and-feel you can envision yourself using. The, refine your Business Plan (with careful attention given to actual logistics) to see if there are enough "solutions" with any particular cart that would indicate a sound preference. (Often it is not truthfully compromise we initially experience when modifying our plans, but modifying our perspectives with regard to our true needs and resources available)

The point is to dive in and take a detailed look at some of the technology available from VodaHost and to see how your solid Plan can be accommodated.

      Client registers......sent to content page....

Content page with paypal or other method of payment button......

client paid and you receive confirmation from above.....
Prefered payment company returns client to your return page......

if clients does not pay, returns to one of your published pages....

Return page NOT published anywhere on your site.......

Return page has thanks for payment and a download button.....
      Client downloads and is happy...............

Easy to setup......easy to maintain......keep it simple.
      Have fun
