    What is a reciprocal link?

    Introduction

Reciprocal links form a vital part of any website promotion effort. You have created great content, or offer a superb product or service -- and now, you want people to know about it.

The Web is only as useful as the sum of its links, as without links it is just a disparate collection of pages. Links are the glue behind the Web. To ensure that your page has the visibility it deserves, you will need other sites to point to yours.

    What is a reciprocal link?

Before plunging into the body of the discussion, it is important to define what a reciprocal link is, and perhaps more importantly, what it is not.

A reciprocal link is a text and/or banner link to a site that, somewhere in its pages, carries a similar text/banner link to your own site.

A reciprocal link is a commitment. This link basically says "The site at the other end of this link feels that my site is important enough to link to, and I feel that their site is important enough that I am willing to let visitors leave my site via this link."

A reciprocal link involves an element of trust. Few Webmasters have the time or patience to constantly monitor the sites that link back to them, so you are trusting the other site to maintain the link on their site, and not bury it under other information or delete it during a site upgrade. Trust me, I have experienced both situations, and it can be frustrating when your own links page is in order.

    How to present your links

There are many different ways to present reciprocal links. You can clearly designate them as reciprocal links and delegate them to specific areas or pages of your site. You can incorporate links to valuable resources inside your own content. You can choose to separate reciprocal links and other links, or lump them all together.

There is no "right" answer: this depends on the specific site. The important thing to remember is that, no matter what approach you choose, be fair to the sites you are linking to. Do not bury the links somewhere under reams of graphics and text, or attempt to dissuade your visitors from following the links in any way. This includes putting the links inside a single "frame" to effectively keep visitors on your site. If your content is compelling enough, your visitors will certainly be back -- and they will thank you for drawing their attention to other interesting sites.

I submitted my site at vodasearch as reciprocal links but my site is still not added in Vodasearch yet. But when I try to resubmit, it says egtours.com is already in directory. I could not find my site in Vodasearch. Please advice.

Hi, I am not sure if these links might get approved in bulk. IE: once month. It took several weeks for mine to be listed. Also make sure the reciprocal link is on your site to VH or yours won’t get listed.
      Regards Chris.

        Hi Chris,

I am not sure if I asked VH to exchange links when I joined. How can I check it? If I haven't done it, how can I do it? It would be great and a pleasure to be able to exchange links with VH!

Hi Cindy, looks like another "new thingie" I'm learning today. I'm not sure I understand completely, is this about putting our affiliate BV banner on our pages and us creating a banner for our site and putting it on theirs? Thanks in advance.

Well, from what I understand, you don't use your affilate banner. When you register you will get a banner code that you put on your site. You have to read the instructions and FAQ's. Then when you upload that code, you can choose what category you want to be listed in. Go have a look HERE to. You get listed on their web directory and search engine. I know I'm not explaining this very good, so maybe someone can have a shot! lol

This is the first time I've ever saw that link, Cindy, you say "When You Register", is that at http://http://vodahost.com/vodasearch/index.php or with BV?
Since my site's theme is "a little bit of everything, I wouldn't know what catagory to put it under, my site is suppose to be for inspiration and guidance to various resources. Thanks for your input Cindy

                  Hi Vodahost,

                  Q. What if we have already signed up for the VodaHost Affiliate Program and
we already have a VodaHost Banner linking to VodaHost.com.
Do we still have to install the script provided in our webpages?
Wouldn't there be one too many links to VodaHost?

I put a reciprocal link on my home page www.gr8greydogcoats.com and VodaSearch doesn't recognize that it is there. What do I need to do? VodaSearch won't let me register. Thanks!

Re: What is a reciprocal link?

I'm confused as to where I place the reciprocal code link on my homepage:

Do I create a "link button" like I've done for pages linked to my home page and put the code I received there before I submit? Please help. I think I have the form filled out correctly but I'm not sure about item #8 on the submit form, as to "where" on my homepage I need to apply the reciprocal code link.
