domain name is not returned on search queries

When I type the URL of my website in Windows Explorer it goes directly to my home page. However, when I type the domain name into a search engine, there is never a return on my query. I've followed the tutorial instructions about ways to ensure or increase your chances of having your website return in a search query and have read some SEO info to increase my chances but I'm surprised thta when I Google my website I get the following:

Your search - Domain Name - did not match any documents.
No pages were found containing Domain Name.

Can someone please explain why? And, what do I need to do in order to see my website returned as a search result when I use a search engine?

Do you have any links to your site so that the se's can find you? Have you read anything here on optimizing your webite?
