    Google verification error 404

    Hi guys,

Would really appreciate some help with this...
I followed the other thread ealing with this same topic to the letter (ithink) and keep getting error 404 when i try to verify with google.

Although iīve uploaded the wordpad file to blue ftp, the browser canīt find it...

    What am i doing wrong?

Also do i need to send my url to google via 'index my website' or 'google submit site' ?

    Many thanks,

    George

    George...

The key here would be.. where did you upload it to? If you didnt put it in the correct folder inside the public_html and the correct domain folder, and you arent giving google the correct location .. they arent going to find it. Make sure you uploaded INSIDE the public-html for the main domain. 99% of the time i find that people have uploaded things to the HOME directory.. meaning outside the public html and in your account folder itself.

No you dont have to submit anything.. but in your dashboard you do have to tell google the path to find your file.

      hey karen,

      many thanks for your help.

Iīve made sure the file is in public-htp

      but its still not working!

Maybe iīve saved the file wrong...

Iīve saved it as the google code. And have copied the google code into the wrodpad document... is this right?

No.. You should either 1.) copy the google code... which is a meta tag of sorts to the HEAD of your index page..or 2.) open notepad, no code needed save file as googleverificationwith 90000000000numbers.html and upload the BLANK html file with the HUGE name. Make SURE you are not putting it in public ftp

ok so i must be incredibly thick, but...

i have saved the google file name as a word pad document,

then dragged it into the public-html folder in blue ftp, the folder that contains all my files...

            still get error 404

giving up the will to live here, must be missing something real stupid...

maybe you can walk me through it...

Also, you mentioned something about copying the file to the 'head of my index page???

            please enlighten me!

            ooh man

              flippin eck..

              what a mission.

              Finally sorted it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to delete the .txt extension that wordpad handily places at the end of your filename, for no apparent reason other than to cause you 12 hours of grief.... lovely

              pheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwww

              thanks
