    Thanks for your replies

I think you're right Planet, in that it is being contained, and not doing any damage, but I still think it is better to try and get rid of it.

Thanks LadyEye for lots of useful resources. I'll go through it all when I get a chance, but I've never done it before and I might have to get someone more techie to have a go at it.

WRONG - that is not right

I hadn't noticed the name of your spyware/trojan until now, but here is what you have ...

      TrojanDownloader.VBS.Psyme.a
This application is a downloader. Downloaders get other programs from the Internet and install them on your computer. Although there are legitimate uses for downloaders, those that persist on your computer after an installation is finished (or those that you don't recognize) could be used to install spyware, viruses, or other malicious software.
Downloaders have the advantage (for a malicious software writer) that they are not viruses themselves, so they may not be recognized by anti-virus software. This gives the virus a peephole into the computer through which it can travel once the downloader is in place.

So you see it is pretty serious, and if not taken care of soon you will have a virus that will corrupt your operating system.

        Re: Getting rid of Spyware

I have tried all the resources recommended and probably scanned my computer with over 20 types of software including spyware doctor, sweeper, catcher, anti-spyware etc....... I've done the scans in normal mode, safe mode, disabled system restore and all that stuff (no idea why as it makes no difference to the results)

None of them get rid of it.

Can anyone tell me of a simple program that I can run that will definitely get rid of it?

I don't mind paying but so far nothing has got rid of it and I don't want to pay for another program that is just the same as something I have already ran.

What is the most user friendly way of getting rid of it?

          Re: Getting rid of Spyware

          Hi again

It's not going to be easy, that's for sure. But I believe you are going to need some help. I've done some looking for you, and there are some forums around that will guide you step by step in doing so. You will need to sign up and register and then create your own thread with your own problem, and continue to check until someone takes your case on and helps you. There are several forums around that do this ... but here is one that I found ... and I believe you can trust ... so I would recommend going here and opening a thread to begin the process of ridding yourself of this trojan downloader ...

Let the people know that are going to help you that you have vbs/psyme

This thread shows how they have helped others with this problem.

          Good Luck

            Excellent question to post Machiavelli!

LadyEye, thanks for all the information you posted it really helps explain things. Knock on wood... I have never experienced a problem and use ZoneAlarm, Ad-Aware SE and AVG.

Is there ever too much protection? Can that cause you additional problems?

              Re: Getting rid of Spyware

              Dori,

yw ... only saw your post here now.

only my opinion, but having an anti-virus program, a firewall, and a program to track and rid you of spyware is essential, but remember the bigger, you need to keep these things up-to-date. With AVG Free edition, you receive one update daily, so if that is at 8:00 am in the morning and throughout the day there are two or three more updates, and you do not manually go to check via "live update" you won't be protected from those new definitions until you do so. During this time, even if it's less than a day, you could become a target, right?

You can only have one anti-virus program running - more than one will cause a conflict. The same with your firewall, with zone alarm, I am sure you noticed you needed to turn off your windows firewall. In so far as adaware program, you can have more than one. There are a few that will conflict with each other, but you have the best, really, the best available for free and seems to be the view of lots of members on this board and other computer forums too.

Up-to-date is the "key word", and of course those rotten microsoft updates that at times throws a kicker in our normal operations until we get those running smooth again ...

              You're doing things right ....

                  Re: Getting rid of Spyware

Try the Bitdefender online scanner. Totally free, I have found it to be very effective against spyware, viruses, and malware.

Please note, the scanner is set to delete without asking, but you can change this if you want to. It also creates a report of everything that it finds and what it does about it. You can save this report, which is great if you need to replace any removed files.

Just go to www.bitdefender.com and look partway down on the left for a 'scan now' button.

I use this to remove persistent viruses which stump my customers. It will even tell you if it fails, and which files and viruses it failed on. Generally it can handle just about anything you throw at it.

                  Well worth a try.
