phpBB forum files by FTP

I am in the process of loading a forum onto one of my sites

At the moment it contains a place holding index page.

I have downloaded all the phpBB forum files onto my own local computer into a phpBB folder and am not sure how to transfer them (as instructed to do) into my vodahost account using FTP.

Can someone explain (in simple terms)the correct proceedure to accomplish this.
There are a total of 11 folders and 16 files downloaded into the phpBB directory.

Theres alot more involved than simply uploading all the files.. and yes you UPLOAD THEM all.. and they must be in their directories and folders just as they are on your hard drive. You must also configure it and make a database.

It might be much easier to INSTALL one from your cpanel, fantastico.

Thanks Karen, I am aware of the complexities of organising and administering a forum identical to the one I am attempting to install. The need is to have full control over it and not be under the present control of another provider having to request any modifications to be made for me.

I have either the documentation you refer to or a similar one from phpBB.

All I am attempting to do is get the files from my computer to the VodaHOst site. Only then can I begin to follow the PhpBB lnstruictuions. The relevant one being

[having downloaded and unzipped the files]
From here you must FTP ALL the files it contains (being sure to retain the directory structure and filenames) to your host.

It also warns me not to alter any of the file names nor force any of them to lower case.


OOps. I have just seen a similar problem and the reply to it
Does that mean if I do upload the phpBB from Fantastico it will save me the bother, but in fact be a full version as I am using now and am trying to load across?

Yes.. although you might have to UPDATE it, which might be easier than altering config files and creating databases and running the install. You would still have to upload some files to the folders already created but you would then see a path.. etc.

After filling in the requested details on page 1 of the installation in fantastico
ie
Install on domain healingleaves.cedartree.org.uk
Instal in directory left blank
Site Name cedartree.org.uk / healingleaves.cedartree.org.uk [I have tried both]

I get the following report

The installation can not be completed:
- You chose to install in the main directory of the domain healingleaves.cedartree.org.uk, but there are conflicting filenames, therefore we can not proceed. Following filenames already exist in the main directory of the domain healingleaves.cedartree.org.uk (path="/home/gsnddnjh/public_html/healingleaves/").You must manually remove these files before proceeding with auto-installation:
.htaccess

The folder is completely empty having been reinstalled as a subdomain where I want it to reside. What files are there to remove?

What am I entering incorrectly?

you need to tick that box that says show hidden files. .htaccess is probably there you just arent seeing it.. also if you have any INDEX files in there to place hold it.. as mentioned before.. that needs to go too.

You are a very patient lady Karen.

The healingleaves folder states This folder is empty. I removed the original folder and recreated it to ensure there was nothing there, and have certainly not inseted an index page.

Now if this file .htaccess is present it is one placed there in the creation of it by Bluevoda. You mention a tick box for hidden files, (I know about this from using othr applications) but can not find such a box at any level in blue voda website builder.

Where do I look?
And could you confirm that my entries I mentioned in my previous question are correct.

(I now haveto sign off and prepare for bed, so I have a 14 hour break to sleep and attend to other duties tomorrow.)

Youd find it in file manager in your control panel. When you create the domain or account its there.. its not visible unless you request it to be. It wont be in BV

Its known as a HIDDEN file.

From my computer control panel > Folder options > View - My setting is SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
In my Blue Voda Website Builder there is no file at any point (in any of the folders) is there a file named .htaccess
I am getting desperate in my ability to find it.

Ammendment to downloaded forum

I finally mastered the act of downloading my phpBB forum but need to modify it with a different skin.

I have chosen the skin and downloaded and unzipped it to my own computer but can not work out how to get it into the files on the BV site so I can work with it.

As a long shot I opened Blue FTP and into the folder with the new skin in it on the let hand panel.
I opened the folder where the file must go to in the right hand panel.
I do not seem to be able to drag it accross. What other means is there to do so?
If there is a way to download 1 file directly from the phpBB styles site, I have not spotte it in FTP.

Right click the folder and choose UPLOAD or use the UPLOAD icon on the menu

Having attempted your instruction I can not do it.
option 1 -when I right click there is no option in the menu to upload.
option 2 - unless I am missing something there is no upload icon but here are two marked move to or copy to
I have tried both and a dialogue box comes up with the name of the file and below it the place it should be going ftp://ipaddress/public_html/healingleaves/styles I have included subdiredories and clicked on OK. A dialogue then appears to be doing something (attempting 1/1) but almost immediatly disaears and nothng has happened.
I know I am becoming a total nuisance, but what am I missing?

Well no one has come back to me in the past 12 hours.

I hope to be able to follow up on things in another 12 hours if someone could PLEASE solve this smal problem with a full explanation as to why Karen's advice is not working for me
