It's not that hard.
When you subtract a number from another one which is composed by the same digits, the sum of the digits that form the result is always 9. If it is bigger than 10, you sum again, and the new result is always 9.
Example 1:
Initial number
9164
6914-
-------
2250 2+2+5= 9
Example 2:
Initial number:
9164
6194-
------
2970 2+9+7 = 18 1+8=9
Now, if (example 1) you circle f.e. 5 and you type in 022 or 202 or 220 the sum of your number is 2+2=4. So Fido's answer will be 9-4 = 5.
So, Fido's answer is always 9 - the sum of the digits you have typed in. Again, if this sum is bigger than 9, you sum the digits of the number you have typed, and then you subtract it from 9.
