      Bummer.....Hate when that happens.
But please do return. California wines are amazing. Last year I had the good fortune of touring a winery during the crush. Incomperable smell, grapes at their best!
I live down by San Francisco but have another place up near Sonoma County where the wines are divine..

Will try and get you some websites where you can get see some of our local wines.

Generally speaking, there are few but some outstanding California wines. Some wine enthusiasts prefer Spanish Riojas, others a Shiraz from So. Africa or Australia or a Malbec from Argentina or a stronger Bordeaux.
As no two wines lovers will ever agree on which is the best wine or the best wine producing region, the important thing is to enjoy a wine you like.

                White or reds?
So Africa has some very good Sauvignon Blancs very reasonably priced.
For reds, look for Chile and Argentina to bring in the best values.

What about Itialy, white wines are nice there arent they?

                    Kate,
I did ask and nothing bad about asking about wines. You might like a (white) Italian "Luna Di Luna" part Chardonnay part Pinot Grigio. Very refreshing and crisp.
I am partial to reds myself and lately have had a wonderful Spanish Rioja Cortijo III Tempranillo - and you can't beat the price.

Rather we taste the German beers.
In the past German wines tended to be slightly sweeter than others.
