Welcome to Voda.
Yep that's the right way to do it - Watch the tutorials in the order suggested, then sit down and plan what you want your site to be, and to look like.
Once you have a plan, sometimes it's good to watch some of the tutorials again,as you are doing each step.
If you get stuck, there are lots of friendly people here who will help you.

I'm trying to reach soholauch, but when I click on control panel I do not see the fantastico smiley face in the bottom right hand corner as the tutorial shows. Any ideas?

Welcome - keep working at it and reading all the forums and tutorials. That is where most of us started. Every time you learn something new to do it is exciting.
