1. 4 coins on each scale, determine which scale is now the lightest, the lighter coin must be within that group of 4.
2. Take group of 4 and divide into two - we now have another set of two that contains the lighter coin ...
3. Take the lighter set of two coins and place one coin in each scale and find the lightest ...

Weigh 3 on the left, 3 on the right. If they weigh the same then weigh the last two and you will find the lighter one.

If one set of 3 weighs more then the other then take any 2 of those and weigh them. Once weighed, one will be lighter then the other or if they are the same then the last one of the 3 is the lightest
