According to an article I read about SEO tricks, Templates are frowned upon by most search engines. I tryed to go with a splash page that showed only content (according to the web builder) and I couldn't put anything in except the color of the background. So what did I do wrong?

Re: Templates
90% of websites use templates of some sort and the rest make a template with whatever builder they are using. I dont know WHAT you read where, but a template by itself wont stop you from getting ranked. It used to be when dynamic sites such as storebuilders and soho came out that search engines had trouble reading and following the urls. Such is not the case any longer.
As far as the splash page you should still be able to put your content and an html coded menu and any other custom include that you wanted.
