When you use the sand background instead of water, it looks to me 'cleaner', easier to read, though I love to look at the water, and it certainly is relevent.
On the whole the cleaner less clutter look is prebably more professional looking....
Anyway, that's what I think.
I like your site.
Somehow, the water is trying to look real, but doesn't quite make it.
So I prefer the sand, but would go with a small border around your main heading to add some relief to the one color sand page.
Are you selling that book Hawaii on your own? Id put a buy it now right on that page if that's all you are selling. If people make it to the bottom of the page, most likely they will be ready to buy the book, so why not let them?

Thank you all. I hate giving up my ocean feel since I live by it. But if it makes the website more inviting, then so be it. I want what is best for sales. There will be further improvements as Beth is helping me, she is my marketer. And I will call upon you all for your opinions again. Thank you.
As far as the water goes in regard as to wether to use sand or water, the problem is with the color itself. Both the blue of the water and the sandy color of the page are almost equal in value. A competition results between the two colors that distract from your page. If you can find darker water and a lighter sand color you might very well find you can keep your water.
I also prefer the 'sand'. I think simpler is more effective, although that sometimes depends on the nature of the site. I think borders would also add a touch more class to the design.
