    Cyprus hits missing on awstats

I live in Cyprus and have created a basic site - www.cyprusvillaforsale.eu solely to sell my villa. I have been checking the awstats for my site and note that the only hits (in the top 25 countries) are for Germany, USA and GB. The 'other' countries which presumably include Cyprus are still zero. Last week I made www.cyprusvillaforsale.eu the home page for both the browsers I use and expected to see the zero change since I use a browser 5-10 times per day - no such luck!!
    Any suggestions?
    Is this a design issue?
Can I do anything to fix it?

    Hi Jim

I’m also based in Cyprus and awstats definitely reflects my hits from Cyprus, I have visited your site from Cyprus a couple of times so let’s see if that helps if not put in a support ticket although I don’t think it’s a big problem.

      Hi Wayne,
Thanks for replying - you are the only one.
I have put in a support ticket and no solution was offered and I was told to try the forum. I don't think this is a forum question, it must be the method used to extract the data via the servers and I can't see how us users can control or change that!
Over 1 week ago I made my site the home page for both the browsers I use and must have made over 50 visits but still zero in the stats!
I presume your Cyprus hits come up in the 'other countries'.

Re: Cyprus hits missing on awstats

Local results are usually quite fickle, and are affected by many variables not typically represented by universal statistical collection methods: for instance, awstats collects may different types of results and will often compile them using common denominators such as the Big 5 (Google, Yahoo, AOL, Alexa, MSN) all of which use English as the default language for both Content and Search metrics. Typically, this is why you see the countries you mentioned as the leading originators of "hits" to your site = they are the predominant countries that use English and the English sub-systems to originate traffic (using those 2 methods). Other European countries use subsidiary systems, although they are owned and operated by the Company, they are 'licensed' networks, and have either additional parameters or fewer than the core model (case in point, the Yahoo netowrk in China, or the Google network in Japan).

Even if your site is in English (therein the good hard-ranking of Content, ans sustained relevance to the major markets), you may wish to consider having a secondary or even a third sister-site in other languages (Turkish, Greek) which will attract and rank independently of the major markets. Of course, this may pose a slight challenge to you (as it requires a good effort to dub a clone site in each language) but it will specifically key into the unique metrics of your "local network" and definitively attract the kind of traffic you seem to be presently 'missing'.....additionally, having duality of language that mirrors English Content structure makes the Search Engines "ghost" value to a previously un-read Content (the languages other than standard English), and create not only a greater rank based on what they classify as "deeper relevance" (although unverified) but a greater probable reliable resource for even the major market search queries to poll from.

        >> Bottom line, if you add one or more languages other than English, you will increase your rank, relevance, and draw across the board.
Just be sure that when you do, it is an exact *******tion of your main English construct, otherwise the SE's will suspect your site of trying to do a number on them, and penalize your site until the issue is clarified (since it can't, this means until the suspected offending construct is removed).

The other issue is how represented you are on those local networks: it is extremely important to include yourself on as many "valued" local directories, city sites, and other leading local websites to have true hard-ranakable inbound links to your site.....this allows you to build a greater local network presence that will compel the Big 5 to allow the aforementioned unverified rank to be translated to themselves. Not only will you rise to the local top but will increase your odds of having your emerging rank be "fed downstream" to all the other subsidiary networks (example: the more visible you become on a local Yahoo network, the more likely Yahoo core will pick you up to re-distribute to all their subsidiaries, confirming your local favor and solidifying it).

PS: The only thing missing from your picture gallery are the views!

You should consider the view from the dining room, an upstairs bedroom (Master bedroom for sure), poolside, and even from the garage looking out to the neighborhood.....all these help a prospective customer imagine themselves there on the property, and will affect any serious decision-making (people want to see where they are supposed to "fit in")!!

            Thanks Vasili,
Quite a lot to take in there! The only quick question is - why does Wayne's (from Cyprus) site get his hits recorded in awstats. I would guess it is because his site is already in the key directories?
I have only taken up the free submission to 40 directories which is included in the Vodahost package. Vodahost advised me that the submission/listing to the directories would not be complete until Jan08, so I won't be subscribing to additional directories until after Jan08.
I don't intend to make a business out of selling my villa but you never know!

Yes, Jim....all about the time in the system. Even Google main cycles over websites on a monthly basis (far too many individual sites to process any sooner), and the compilation from other networks simply adds time, double-checking, etc. to the process.

The principles I mentioned are important to keep in mind for any site that is dealing with the variables inherent with international networks. Even country specific domains have a part to play in the processing ... like the .co.uk (extensions for British domains) or .in (for India). That is why .com extensions are so highly prized, being more "first tier" in value.

It is often overwhelming to try and keep every little aspect in your mind when designing a website, but each tiny element is crucial to the whole. Just taking a look at the struggles eBay is having trying to address the same complex valuation processes points this out clearly .... not only do they have to have symbiotic sites in multiple languages, they have to force the integration of value across systems that need to be independently controlled (esp. in China).

Hang in there......it will all come. Add some "view" pictures if possible, and seed your site on strategically targeted local sites, such as the popular caffenio, the business league, a realty bulletin board, etc. It will help.
