A simple solution, happily. You must publish your main page as index only; remove the "1".

Ok I republished the pages and changed all my home links to "index". Now the home page loads right but the only other page that will link is the committee page, and whenthe home page loads it is listed as "index1a". What do I need to fix next?

          1. Make sure all your pages have the right links between each other.
          2. Make sure you have saved all pages & published as all files.
          3. The link back to your home page should be just www.dclongbeards.org &
          not www.dclongbeards.org/index.html
          4. The part you see as "index1a" can be changed in the page property's
area under title. Do not call this Home page, but relate it to the pages
          content. IE: Wild turkey conservation.
          5. Try not to use images for text as the SE's will find it hard to find you.
