I am trying to come to grips with the CP file manager. I note that there are several files listed on the right hand side which I no longer use, yet which turn up in the awstats area. For example the ventes page, not used for months, and is oddly distorted besides when I get the page up. Should I be deleting this stuff regularly? How do visitors access these things if they are nowhere signaled on the published pages?

If they are still on your server the additional hits may occur because the pages were bookmarked.CarbonTerry

Re: www.provencesporthorses.com
If you have old pages on your server then by all means delete them from your server. it is easier (for me) to access your files by going thru the BV FTP Manager.
Open the BV Web Builder:
Tools/FTP Manager/
Enter password/username
Open public_html folder
Select old files and delete
Additionally you will need to create a custom 404 error page to keep those who have bookmarked the old pages on your site
Go here to see a custom 404 page.CarbonTerry

Re: www.provencesporthorses.com
I have published the 404 page, but how do I get into the htaccess file to add code? When I click it, I get "problem executing the viewer" error. You also suggest "generate a .htaccess file in your BV Folder". How is this done?

Re: www.provencesporthorses.com
The .htaccess file should open by default in Notepad
I don't know why it wont open. Do you have Notepad on your OS ?
It's easier to open it from the FTP window rather than the CPanel.
You really don't want to create another .htaccess file if you can't see what's on the one in your server now.
I'll go thru it any way.
Open Notepad
enter: ErrorDocument 404 /404.html
It must be exactly as above. Copy & Paste from here.
File Save As (in your BV web builder folder)
.htaccess (note the period before "h", this is critical)
FTP the new file to your public_html folder or to the addon folder if it is for an addon domain.CarbonTerry

Re: www.provencesporthorses.com
I just viewed your 404 page. It must be 404 only. You have it saved as 404_error. This will not work.CarbonTerry

Re: www.provencesporthorses.com
Thanks for this. I have adjusted and republished the 404 page accordingly.
I have wordpad which came with Windows XP. But the .htaccess file simply won't open -- I get a BlueFTP Error "Problem with executing of the viewer". I have done this through FTP window rather than CPanel. The rest of your instructions seem clear, but I am blocked before I can execute them.

Re: www.provencesporthorses.com
I have tried dragging and using the copy function, which succeeds in getting the .htaccess in desktop (in a folder which clearly doesn't have .htaccess in it previously, although it prompts me whether I want to replace an already existing file), but it is a file with 0 kb, whereas the original has 1 kb. I don't understand...

Re: www.provencesporthorses.com
Just drag it directly to the desktop. Do not put in a folder.
You can email me the file and I will look at it. Use the Contact Us link not the form. I will edit it and return to you.CarbonTerry
