add-on domain quandry

I purchased a .org domain through VH to add on to my current domain
which is a .com Is this possible, or do they have to match?
Will I need to purchase a separate hosting to accomodate the .org?
Or, will it work ok?
I configured the server and the control panel for the add on name,
but it doesn't ask for the extention.
