    domain clarification please

Whats the difference between a subdomain and an add-on domain. And what is a parked domain (while I'm at it).

I have a single domain at the moment, but am thinking of adding 2 more domain names.

One would be for a top level directory, but the other would need to direct to a 3rd level directory.

    eg.
    /public_html/subentity1
    /public_html/thingy/thingy2/subentity2

where the subentity is the directory that the new domains would need to point to.

Both are existing directory structures and cant be moved without a lot of hassells.

I was wondering how this should be done for each one.

    Any advise is appreciated. :)

    1. A parked domain is a domain name that you have purchased and is not pointed to a web server or your webhost.

    2. A subdomain is essentially a folder/file within your main domain, is free to add, and carries the name of your main domain with it in it's url (address).

    3. An add on domain, acts exactly the same as your main domain, meaning it is independent of any other domain and costs for the name of this domain.

You can have unlimited sub and add on domains in your one voda hosting account.

If these directories, folders, are already created and you decided to go to an add-on domain, you can simple move these files from folder to folder within your control panel. Not much work ...

So when you create an add-on domain, it creates a new directory in public_html ? eg public_html/add-on. I assume the directory name is the same as the domain name you choose ?

And your saying to then copy the existing directory structure to the new directory ?

Theres just the matter then of either a million redirection files or changing a million links on external sites :( I was hoping the add-on would attach to the existing structure so I wouldnt ahve to do any of that. (not a million, but a significant number).

Is there anyway to put a directory level redirection in for any file hit under that directory ?

I believe the above script would work for that ... you can redirect that new add on domain that you purchase to the url you want ... (what is in red is what you change) ....

You place this script in the page html (right click on the page and you will see where) place between head tag.

If you mean the painting on my home page, it was done by a freind. She kindly gave me permission to use it. She has done some very inspiring work in recent times, but that one is my favourite.

Glad you like to too :)

                    Re: domain clarification please

I've finally come back to this add-on domain issue and would like to reclarify.

If the primary domain is something.com then we get a directory structure like this :

                    public_html

Now when you put an add-on domain of thisisit.com you get a directory structure that looks like this :

                    public_html
                    .....thisisit

                    So www.something.com will execute public_html/index.html
                    and
                    www.thisisit.com will execute public_html/thisisit/index.html

                    Would that be right ?

I want to be sure I understand how it works before I order it all.

Everything for your main domain gets published and is stored in public_html (unless you have created additional folders inside for this domain) and will execute the index page for this domain

Everything for your add on domain gets published and is stored in public_html/addondomain and will execute the index page for this domain

P.S. - you need not ever type index.html as by default this is the page that is brought up when typing in either domain .. this holds true for this index page only - all other pages need the nameofthepage.html typed for the page to open ..

It is also a good idea to create a folder on your computer in MYDOCUMENTS/BLUEVODA by the name of this add on domain and then store all of the .bvp files that you make in this folder - this prevents any overwriting of your current .bvp files that may end up being named the same - examples - index - contactus - and possibly more ...

Remember too that you must type the name of the domain after public_html/ for your add on domain and remove this when publishing pages to your main domain - you do not use the .com extension or anything - only the name of the domain ...

                      Good Luck ..

                            New question :

Is there anyway of doing directory level redirect ?

I've copied what was a deep subdirectory into the new domain, now I want to say to any incoming old url for anything in that old directory to go to the new domain instead and pick up the same file name there.

Any way of doing that ?

Cpanel seems to have a file redirect, but given there is several dozen pages that get outside hits, I'd rather not have to set up redirection for all of them individually.

Correction : 43 different files that all get hit from outside links individually.

Thats too many to do individual redirects for.
