Difference between Add on and Sub domains

    Hi

Can you tell me the difference between Add On and SubDomains, I am a Newbie ands haven't got my head around it yet.
Can I put a sub-domain onto a domain name and how is it expressed?
Can I put an Add on domain onto a domain name and how is that expressed? Can anyone advise me please?
    Regards, Mary Cavill

Re: Difference between Add on and Sub domains

Add-On Domains are when you use a paid and registered Domain Name to create a "separate" website within a single hosting account: you "add on" another domain, and create a separate Directory in which to publish an individual website.

Sub-Domains are separate Directories that do not require using a separate paid and registered Domain name to create an additional website, as they are basically a "sub-folder" of another Domain-based directory/website.

For example, each hosting account has a Primary Domain (or Main Domain) associated with it with a name like "MyFirstWebsite.com," and you wish to include a new and different website within your hosting account named "MyBusinessWebsite.com" as well .... you would first need to create within your Control Panel an Add-On Domain (directory) named "MyBusinessWebsite" so when the DNS/Nameserver info is configured for that new domain name it will "point" to your hosting account and find an actual Directory and thus display the new website.

If you did not want to pay for another Domain name and simply wanted to have a separate "website" still in place for yourt Business, you could create a Sub-Domain in cPanel with a name such as "MyBusinessWebsite" and as a sub-folder (directory) of your Primary, it would still be treated as a separate website/section, but not have a URL of it's own, since it does not have a separate Domain name of it's own, and the link would look like "MyBusinessWebsite.MyFirstWebsite.com"

Add-On Domains are preferred, as they have distinct URLs and are Domain-based and thus have clearly unique values for the Search Engines to attribute values upon and completely independent access for traffic to use to get to them.

Re: Difference between Add on and Sub domains

Just as an addition to what Vasili mentioned above:

Subdomains are usually used (although not necessary) for separate sections of a website.

In example, if you have a store, you can create a subdomain named "store". The same if you have a part of the website dedicated to members only.

In these example cases, you can add the subdomains and set the users to go to:

      and

As you understand, there is a different "logic" in the case of subdomains compared to that of "addon" domains.

Can you tell me quickly does one have to purchase any "add on" web domains or are they covered under the original domain name which has been paid for and to which they will be added.
          Thank you

You must purchase a domain name for each Add-On Domain you associate with your paid hosting account.
