    Spam Question

    Hey everyone

I use the Horde web mail for my site. I've been getting up to 15 spam mail a day on my 5 email addresses.

I have blacklisted numerous e-mails but they seem to keep coming back.

I know that for S.E.O it is recommended you have contact e-mails on your site but because of the constant spam I'm thinking of removing them.

Is there any other way around this problem.

Instead of having text depict your e-mail address- try making it a jpg or gif. Bots cant read those.

Easier to delete them than to blacklist them.

15 spams a day is nothing, consider yourself lucky. I get over 2000.

Popularity has it's pratfalls, doesn't it Boss??

The best remedy I've found to minimize spam is exclusive use of validated email forms, with the email field limited to only one symbol. This is especially helpful to implement first, and then actually setting up an email alias (assuring that it has not been "exposed" to the internet previously).

Submittors can always "collect" my active and recognized email address either via their Sent mail, or during the reverse Opt-In/Validation process I apply.

It is impossible, they are not spammers until they post there spam, at that point the damage is done, it is a constant cleaning and prunning effort. We delete over 100 spams a day o this forum, welcome to the internet!

                    Robert,
That is why I advised against using a blog way back when: with a Forum, only Registered Users (you approve them, screen them) can post and participate, and those who do not wish to be accountable can read the forum, yet are prevented from "spamming" with inappropriate material....

If you are unwilling to change formats now, you can simply password-protect it, and convert it into a private area. Merely insert a page explaining the process of applying for a User Password to enter this area.
(Most people understand this nowadays, and are not unaccustomed to the process)

I afraid that this doesn't protect you from bots that crawl your site, because they don't read the gif (or jpg) but the code of the page. It will only protect you from human email collectors, and only if they don't look at the code. Since spammers usually collect email addresses by crawiling sites with bots, the only way to protect your self is to use, yes, an image, or button or text link, but in the same time encrypt the email address: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/emailriddler/

Having a blog open to the general public, tho, can be of great benefit to sales sites - IF the blog gets the right traffic. And a blog is easier (IMO) to maintain.

But, yes, spam is always going to be a problem.

                              Re: Spam Question

Blogs are not a boon to sales sites, as evidenced across the internet. (They might have been years ago, but no longer fulfill the desired effect on conversion vs. risk).

For example, even the WordPress "blog" used at CondeNast's Bride Magazine "Community" is fully restricted by pre-registration of all users. They too, have spent extra to add the security that is required in today's online jungle rife with abusers and opportunity to ruinate sites. This is just one of more than a dozen I can point to to illustrate my point, and the reason this one tops my list is because they have more than 80M unique visitors per year (which in my mind is motivation to manage effectively).

I fail to see the need to post without adding to the developing precepts or conceptual development that would prove to be assistive......
