If I'm making a button linke to http://www.exapmle.com/example
how do I know if I need to put a .html or .php at the end of /example?

On your the page you're wondering about, right click, choose Page Properties, and see what file extension is listed. (Default is .html, so if you didn't change it when you built the page, you can bet .html is the extension you'll want to use.)
