customizing the browser with the favicon.ico

Is there a special trick to getting this to work. i put the image named favicon.ico in the public_html folder and added the code <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

but the browser isn't picking it up. i know my browser supports it because i see them on other sites. anyone got any ideas?

Depending on the browser, sometimes the site has to be in your favorites folder for the favicon to display. If it was already in your favorites folder before adding the favicon, you may need to remove it from favorites, clear your cache and restart the browser before adding it once again.

I don't know about that code, either. I didn't use any type of code and my favicon.ico shows fine for most (not all) people.

ok, but shouldn't it show up in the browser first?

Like I say, it depends on the browser. All favicons show fine in my browser, but not all browsers will show them.
