I want to build a web site that lists businesses and I'm trying to figure out how to add a search function. I can build the site but I'm confused as to how to integrate the search funtionality so that a visitor would be able to type in a word or phrase and then search.

Youd have to incorporate a 3rd party script. You can use googles, and theres a few around that have ads, that arent too bad. Or find and install one on your account.

I dont know where to begin elaborating. In order to put a search function on your site, you will have to add some coding or install scripting. You can use for instance googles search box, by going to google, getting the code and pasting it on your site someplace. There are others besides googles, but these will have ads and the ability to also search the web, therefore, losing your customer.

The other way is to run and install a script which makes like a database and displays the results. Do a SEARCH for website search scripts.
