    problem with my download page

    Help gang please....

After lots of pratting about getting my magazine file uploaded to my directory without becoming corrupted, I've eventually managed it by going via Filezilla.

Now, when I go to my index page on the site to carry out the dowload, I get a directory page. I can still carry out the download, but only by clicking on an entry on that page. That page shouldn't be there should it?

If so, does anyone know how I can get rid.

    Thanks all

    Lee

You can link straight to the pdf and they should get a download box.

Karen, thanks for the reply, but I don't quite understand - I thought that's what I'd done.

My link is to: bv.zip which is the file I've downloaded, and that's what shows on the file manager.

        why have you zipped it?

I have a website with over 200 pdf's to download on it. Just upload the pdf onto your server then link directly to it.

Zipping a pdf file doesn't help much compression wise, just makes it harder for people to read it if they don't have a way to unzip. The real reason to zip pdf files is if you have many in folders within folders; zipping will retain the folder structure for people who download.

Was told that because it's a large file it should be zipped.....
I'll try and upload it unzipped and see what happens. Then I'll report back.

            Thanks all for the advice.

Ok, give us the link when you have done it and we''ll see if its too big.

If it is, how about splitting it for your viewers? part 1, part 2 etc?

Re: problem with my download page

Right, I've uploaded it and linked to it and now I get a "You don't have permission" window.

                What've I done now????

The last time I did this (for last month's magazine edition) it was fine, and I just went the same way this time, but it's been all to pot!

Obviosly I'm cocking something up somewhere, but I just can't see it - can you?

Try this: Open up your public_html folder in FTP Manager (Tools>FTP Manager). Connect so that the right pane shows the list of everything in your public folder. Hunt around until you find decmag.pdf. Right click on that and choose "properties." On the window that opens, make sure "permissions" is set to 644.

Re: problem with my download page

                    Tom,

You're absolutely correct, the permission is set to 600.

However, I can't change it. When I click on "change permissions", the numbers in the boxes won't alter.

Is this something to do with me being only able to access my files in Legacy as when I try to run the ordinary file manager, I get a message telling me "a script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly", then the program becomes unresponsive and I have to shut it down. Customer support told me to use Legacy File Manager instead, which allows me access to the files, but, as I said, I can't change the permissions.

Your further advice would be appreciated

                    Regards
