image upload error

Everything was ok for 2 yr. Now suddenly I get error image directory is not writable. I checked the CHMOD value in filemanger in Cpanel it is 755 which is correct..
What should I do?? pls help as I am not able to upload any product untill I make Image directory value 777 which is dangerous...
