How do I upload a file to be verified

Im trying to verify my site, the instructions are to a code into the root directory of your site. For example, your site's URL is http://www.*****.com/, and the file is called fthipa_844.txt, so the file needs to be accessible at the address http://www.*****.com/ftrya_844.txt can someone tell me how to do this, when i save the page it becomes a html page and not a txt
