htaccess files - custom 404 message

It seems we've deleted the htaccess file when clearing out old files using BlueFTP prior to uploading our new website (www.architectsussex.co.uk). Now we want to upload a custom 404 page. A search of the forums on "how to do it" says we need to do something (not sure what !) to the htaccess file, which we don't have any longer.

Vodahost Support says "Open a notepad document. (OK) Create your htaccess file. (HOW ?) Save as .htaccess. (OK) Upload to the server. (OK)"

Q1 What is an htaccess file ?
Q2 Do we need an htaccess file ?
Q3 How do we get one ?

As you can probably see, we're not computer experts, so help needed please.

Oh, and another thing ! At the bottom of this "post" is a box saying we can add tags. OK, you guessed ! "What are tags and why would we want to add them? We won't ask about "trackback" but is that similar to "cashback" ?
